SEDES Visualizations

These visualizations are sample outputs of SEDES, a system for analyzing metrical position in Greek hexameter.

Texts

Instructions: Select a text above by the feature being measured (lemma, word, metrical shape) and extent of data (corpus). For example, "Iliad [text]" under "Lemma" gathers data only concerning lemma from the Iliad. Conversly, "Shield [archaic]" under "Metrical shape" gathers data concerning metrical shapes from all of archaic epic. Once there, you can:

  1. Align the beginning of words to the sedes grid.
  2. Highlight the text according to the statistical frequency (z) of lemma, word, or metrical shape in sedes. The darker the shade, the less frequent the lemma, word, or metrical shape in its metrical position.
  3. Hover over a word to see its data, e.g. its lemma; sedes; frequency of its lemma, word, or metrical shape in its sedes (x); total occurrence of lemma, word, or metrical shape (Σx); number of standard deviations from the mean average of the lemma, word, or metrical shape in its range of sedes (z); and its metrical shape.
  4. Click a word to produce the above data as well as a table of the frequency (x), percentile (x/Σx), and standard deviations (z) of the lemma, word, or metrical shape in the sedes grid.
